Visit Kootenay Acres Farm Sanctuary

Meet Nova, the wry-neck lamb; Giesela, Lagatha, and Moku, our incredible blind sheep; Buddy and Baby, who were born different but thrive; Stiorra born with Spina Bifida who we were told wouldn't live past a week, Louie, our cross-beaked goose, dozens of chickens who "stopped laying" and so many more amazing animal residents. Each resident at Kootenay Acres Farm Sanctuary has a unique story and has found safety and love here.

Every visit allows you to hear these stories—how some were born with disabilities, how others narrowly escaped auction or slaughter, and how they’ve come to thrive in a safe haven.

Kootenay Acres Farm Sanctuary is a registered non-profit farm animal sanctuary located in the West Kootenays. We are currently applying for charitable status.  We are dedicated to providing lifelong care to almost 80 rescued, rehomed, and special-needs farm animals while promoting compassion, education, and humane treatment for all animals.

Our Mission

To provide a safe haven for farm animals, promote responsible and humane treatment, and advocate for animals traditionally used in farming as companions.

How We Achieve This

• Community outreach
• Educational and social media content
• Sanctuary tours and educational experiences

Private Sanctuary Tours

We are currently accepting private weekend tours by appointment.

Tours typically last 60–90 minutes and include a guided walk through the sanctuary, introductions to our animal residents, and opportunities to learn about farm animal rescue and care.

Since opening our doors, we have welcomed visitors, volunteers, school groups, and community members from the Kootenays and around the world.

Respecting the Animals

Kootenay Acres is not a petting zoo. The wellbeing of our animal residents always comes first. While some animals enjoy human interaction, others prefer their space. We encourage respectful interactions and ask visitors to follow the guidance of their tour host at all times.

Children must remain under the direct supervision of their accompanying adult. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both visitors and animals, we are able to accommodate a maximum of two children per adult. Running, chasing animals, loud noises, and disruptive behavior are not permitted.  The sanctuary animals have not had much exposure to children, so slow moments and quiet energy is the best approach for these animals.

Available Tour Times

10:00 AM
12:00 PM
Additional times may be available upon request.

Donation

We are 100% funded by donations.  We are offering tours to support with our fundraising to care for the animals.

Minimum Donation: $25 per visitor
Children 5 and under are free

100% of your donation is used directly for the animals. Your support helps provide feed, hay, bedding, shelter improvements, veterinary care, and daily support for the residents who call Kootenay Acres home.

Your visit directly supports the animals and helps us continue providing lifelong sanctuary to those who need it most.

Accessibility

Please contact us regarding accessibility needs, and we will do our best to accommodate your visit.

A Small Team with a Big Mission
Kootenay Acres Farm Sanctuary is primarily run by volunteers. Founder Aimee works full-time outside of the sanctuary, and nearly every other waking hour is dedicated to the animals in her care.

Our website, social media, and email communications are supported by volunteers from around the world who share a passion for animal welfare and compassionate living. While we do our best to respond promptly, replies may occasionally take a little longer during busy periods. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
